This past weekend kicked off El Paso’s 2024 Track and Field season and if this is any indication of what we’re to expect in the coming weeks; we’re in for one heck of a ride! I was out at the Clint Invitational meet and they ran a very well meet.

Friday:
Friday’s excitement was led by the varsity boy’s 3200m race. We had 5 boys under 10 minutes and 3 of those went sub 9:40. Much of the first mile consisted of a tight pack between the top 4 runners: Julian Guerra from San Elizario HS, Danny Torres from Eastwood HS, Leo Valenzuela, and Miles Westbrook, both of which are from El Paso HS. It wasn’t until the last mile where we saw Westbrook make a push to control the race with his teammate Leo and Danny behind him. With the last lap bell ringing we got to see these young men turn on a whole new gear as they were all gunning for the top spot. It wasn’t until about 150m left in the race we saw a tight battle between Miles and Danny. In the end, Torres was able to edge past Westbrook and take home the gold in the season’s first 3200m race. Torres was a nationally ranked runner last year in Cross Country when he made his first Nike National appearance. We can expect a lot more from him as dive deeper into the season.

Top 5 3200m Times:
1. Danny Torres – 9:26.98
2. Miles Westbrook – 9:27.39
3. Leo Valenzuela – 9:37.69
4. Julian Guerra – 9:45.22
5. Luke Cruz – 9:47.92

Saturday:
Saturday’s finals were highlighted by the sprinters. In the 4x100m race we were able to catch up with the varsity boys from Canutillo HS.
Despite a bronze finish for this talented group, they were very optimistic about their ability to remain focused and improve as the season goes on.

Top 3 Boys 4x100m Times:
1. Eastwood HS – 43.29
2. Clint Horizon HS – 44.23

On the girl’s side, we capped the meet off with an incredible performance in the 4x400m race. The Eastwood HS ladies put on quite the show with their decisive performance to earn themselves some gold. They were very positive when talking about the work they’ve put in so far as they approached the Clint Invitational. They also felt like their work will translate well as the season progresses. See what they had to say:
